Catching Up with the Ladies

Since GC didn't air the first round of the Shoprite LPGA Classic until midnight Friday, many of you may not know how things stand. Let me get you up to speed.

This event is played on a par-71, 6150-yard course. You may immediately expect this to be an easy track, but it's actually a links-style course. There are relatively few trees, it has the traditional heather-style rough of a links course, and it's located right beside a lake near the ocean. Oh, and it's in New Jersey -- right up there where all the bad weather has been this past week. Add all the wind to some hard and fast conditions, and you get one tough course.

In fact, three of the longest hitters on Tour -- Vicky Hurst, Brittany Lincicome, and Michelle Wie -- clocked in with driving distances of 235, 255, and 260 yards respectively. This course isn't playing easy for anybody. Only 13 players are under par, with another 16 at even. There were around 16 players who shot 80 or worse!

Don't expect much out of Yani Tseng this week. She injured her shoulder during a practice round earlier in the week and shot a 2-over 73.

Here are the Top 10 after the first round (yes, I know there are 13 players listed):
  • -5: Jiyai Shin
  • -4: Sandra Gal
  • -3: Catriona Matthew
  • -2: Cristie Kerr, Lindsey Wright, Vicky Hurst, I.K. Kim, Karen Stupples, Anna Grzebien
  • -1: Mika Miyazato, Karrie Webb, Gerina Pillar (the former Gerina Mendoza from Big Break), Amy Yang
Mariajo Uribe, the winner in Brazil last weekend, is at E, as is Anna Nordqvist and Kristy McPherson.

Paula Creamer (fresh off her 3rd place at the PPG Ignition event earlier this week) joins Brittany Lincicome and Michelle Wie in the group at +1.

Ai Miyazato and Se Ri Pak are at +2, Juli Inkster's at +3, and Morgan Pressel's way back at +4 with Na Yeon Choi.

Lexi Thompson really struggled; she posted +6. (BTW, big-hitting Lexi could only muster 247 off the tee. Tough conditions!)

That should get you caught up for the Saturday broadcast at 5pm on GC. And you can check out the leaderboard by clicking the "LPGA Tour" link under "Live Leaderboards" heading on the right side of the blog.

BTW, you can now customize the LPGA leaderboard. Just click on the "+" beside a player's name, and it will be added to the "My Leaderboard" section at the top. Makes it much easier to follow your favorite players!
