Defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez got his second major win last year at St. Andrews, making him the first Spaniard to win the Senior Open. This year he defends at Royal Lytham & St. Annes, where the game will be a bit different. There are no less than 167 bunkers around the course, making accuracy a necessity.
You can find the pgatour.com power rankings at this link, in case you're playing fantasy golf for this event. Jimenez is a mere 6th on the list, with recent SENIOR PLAYERS winner Retief Goosen being the favorite. And believe it or not, Bernhard Langer is 3rd on the list despite a slow year with only one win early on. (I wouldn't bet against Bernhard, but everybody has off years and I don't think I'd put him that high.)
And pgatour.com lists GC's coverage at 7am ET (2.5 hours) on Thursday, then more coverage at 11:30am ET (2.5 more hours). GC seems to have been doing split coverage for European events quite a bit lately, and it will give us some extra coverage of the last Champions major of the year.
It's split like that because the Evian Championship was shoehorned into this week on the schedule to get away from the more unpredictable weather of September. They're also getting fragmented coverage on The Golf Channel, and because they insist on airing Morning Drive on the weekend they've bumped some of the coverage onto CNBC (?!?). Both will be streamed live uninterrupted on the Golf Channel and NBC Sports apps.
