Matt over at the MrShortGame channel has two different ways you can play shots around the green from hardpan. He says these shots also work from wood chips and mulch around the green, so this is a pretty good lesson. I would say his primary key to both of these shots is your weight distribution, as almost all short game shots require you to keep your weight a bit more on your lead foot to prevent reverse pivots and sways that result in mis-hits.
One interesting tip from this video: Matt says that, if you are in doubt about how to play a trouble shot around the green, you'll probably get a usable result if you just play the shot like a bunker shot. That one piece of advice might save you some heartache during a round!
