Gaby Lopez with Dana Open trophy

My first week making LPGA Twofer Tuesday picks went okay, I guess. I had Lydia Ko (T16) and Brooke Henderson (T13). Two Top20s but I expected better.

  • Top10s: 25 for 92 (16 Top5, 9 Top10)
  • Winners: 3 for 45
  • Top20s: 40 for 92

My proven players, Ko and Henderson, had some good days and some bad days last week. Unfortunately for them, there were too many players having good days pretty much every day! I expected Lucy Li to have a good week but not as good as she had. Megan Kang seemed to come out of nowhere on Sunday. Caroline Masson just plodded along all week, posting good scores every round.

In the end it was Gaby Lopez putting in a sprint to end the (event formerly known as the) Marathon who locked down the win. It had been over two years since her last win, and she says she's been working on not being so hard on herself and on trying to find a way to "stay on the couch" -- that is, stay in the moment and let the game come to her.

Well, boy did it come on Sunday! Eight birdies, no bogeys and three birdies to finish the round and snatch all hope from her pursuers. And since I don't normally do Limerick Summaries for the LPGA, it seems only appropriate that such a performance would get one of my rare LPGA awards. Congratulations, Gaby!

Her Marathon ended a drought
That lasted two years thereabout.
When Gaby was done,
Her third tournament won
Gave her confidence, that’s not in doubt.
