The Limerick Summary: 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions

Winner: Jon Rahm

Around the wider world of golf: This was the only event on the tours this week.

Jon Rahm with SToC trophy

My first Twofer Tuesday picks of 2023 were largely a bust. I had Justin Thomas (T25) and Xander Schauffele (WD). The irony here is that I was having trouble choosing between JT, Xander and Jon Rahm so I took the two previous winners. But I didn't know about Xander's back problems; if I had, I would have picked Rahm. Then Xander withdrew on Friday and JT forgot how to play. I hope this isn't an omen about my 2023 picks going forward!

  • Top10s: 0 for 2 (0 Top5, 0 Top10)
  • Winners: 0 for 1 event
  • Top20s: 0 for 2

My bad luck aside, it's really no surprise that Jon won this event. Last year he shot an inhumanly low score of 259 (-33 and he still lost by 1) and finished 2022 with 2 wins in his last four events. Shooting 265 (-27) this year — and a 10-under round on Sunday — was almost a walk in the park for him.

Granted, it looked like Collin Morikawa was going to walk off with this one. Jon was 7 strokes back to start the final round and was 9 back early in the round. But Collin's game deserted him at crucial moments while Jon just went from strength to strength.

As I said, this win really isn't a surprise. But it should serve as a warning to fields going forward, because it's clear Jon Rahm has come to play in 2023. And he's got the first Limerick Summary of 2023 to prove it.

For Collin, I’m sure the loss smarted;
Jon was seven behind when they started!
But that’s just how it goes
If you think you can close
Once Jon Rahm gets his season restarted!
