Twofer Tuesday: Dana Open

Twofer Tuesday takes a break from the PGA Tour (while they take a break of their own) to spend some time in Ohio with the LPGA at the Dana Open presented by Marathon.

Defending champion Nasa Hataoka

If you feel a bit confused, don't be. Last year this event was called the Marathon LPGA Classic. Marathon is still involved but is now the presenting sponsor while Dana Incorporated becomes the new title sponsor. Same event, new name.

The event is still being held at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania OH. And Nasa Hataoka is still the defending champion. In addition, the field includes two-time winner Lydia Ko, 2020 champion Danielle Kang, and major winners Minjee Lee, Brooke Henderson, Lexi Thompson, Sei Young Kim, and Ariya Jutanugarn.

So this week's picks are a bit different. While the men play every week, the women play in what I guess you could call 'cycles' -- that is, they play a sequence of events, get a week or two off, then play another sequence. This is the second event in a seven-event cycle being played in North America. Figuring out how to factor that into my picks is a new experience.

  • My first pick is Lydia Ko. Lydia is on a run of 8 Top7 finishes in her last 10 events, seemingly unaffected by the weeks off between cycles. Can't bet against her this week.
  • My other pick is Brooke Henderson. She's been hit-and-miss this year, but she hada run of 6 Top16s (2 of those were wins) that ended last week in Canada where she finished T49. I'm chalking that up to the pressure of winning at home.

GC's live coverage starts Thursday at 1pm ET. We're getting 12 hours of live coverage this week, and I'm looking forward to covering some LPGA events for a change. Maybe I'll have better luck picking the ladies. After all, they say Luck is a lady, right?
