Winner: Tom Hoge & Sahith Theegala
Around the wider world of golf: Ockie Strydom won the Alfred Dunhill Championship on the DP World Tour; Cristóbal Del Solar won the Neuquén Argentina Classic on the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica; and Justin Thomas & Jordan Spieth beat Tiger Woods & Rory McIlroy in The Match.
My plan to pad my Twofer Tuesday picks this week worked well. I had Harris English & Matt Kuchar (3) and Steve Stricker & Cameron Young (7). Still couldn't pick a winner, even with such a limited field, but it still makes my 2022 record look better.
- Top10s: 38 for 117 (23 Top5, 15Top10)
- Winners: 5 for 59
- Top20s: 54 for 117
It was probably the biggest surprise of the week, that the oldest team with the worst Power Ranking this week (Charley Hoffman & Ryan Palmer) faced off against a rookie team (Sahith Theegala & Tom Hoge) for the QBE Shootout title. Meanwhile, the odds-on favorite team (Matt Kuchar & Harris English) struggled to try and keep up.
But such is the world of golf, isn't it? The weather was nearly perfect all three days and it seemed everybody was playing well. The old guys seemed to be particularly miffed at the perceived lack of respect in their ranking and they led from the first round.
However, the rookies hit their stride on Sunday. While they didn't shoot their lowest round of the week, they tied the lowest... and it was enough to squeak by the old guys and win by a stroke.
Hoge may have only one win on Tour and Theegala still waiting, but things look bright for them in 2023. And Sahith even gets his first Limerick Summary. If that's not a breakthrough, I don't know what is!
Theegala and Hoge were clutch;
Their skill down the stretch was too much.
Some managed to catch them;
For moments, to match them—
At the end, though, they couldn’t be touched.
