The Limerick Summary: 2023 The American Express

Winner: Jon Rahm

Around the wider world of golf: Brooke Henderson won the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions on the LPGA (Mardy Fish won the celebrity division); Victor Perez won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the DP World Tour; Steve Stricker won the Mitsubishi Electric Championship on the Champions Tour; and Cristobal Del Solar won the Bahamas Great Abaco Classic at The Abaco Club on the Korn Ferry Tour.

My Twofer Tuesday picks are turning out to be a case of feast or famine. I had Jon Rahm (1) and Will Zalatoris (T36). Out of six picks so far in 2023, five haven't even made the Top20... and the other one won! Golf is a strange game...

  • Top10s: 1 for 6 (1Top5, 0 Top10)
  • Winners: 1 for 3 events
  • Top20s: 1 for 6

I suppose we all expected a blowout during Sunday's round... but it ended up simply being a struggle to hold on. Jon Rahm and rookie Davis Thompson began the day tied but it was Rahm's experience that allowed him to hang on and eke out a one-shot victory.

This was Jon's second PGA TOUR win in his second start of the year, and he has now won four of this last six worldwide starts. (However, in my site's RGWR, he's got five wins over the last 12 months.) He's expected to move up to #3 in the OWGR this week, but at this rate it won't be long before he's in the top spot.

So Jon Rahm begins the new 2023 Limerick Summary race with two of his own. Will anyone be able to match him? How many will he win this year? I don't know, but he's teeing it up at Torrey Pines next week...

Since Jon Rahm’s second win of the year
Tied his score from the first, it seems clear
If his game stays this good,
In a few weeks he should
Become World Number One. He’s that near.
